What is accompained?
You must be in the presence of a licensed hunter age 19 or older who has unaided visual contact and verbal communications with you at all times. The idea is to allow for training of novice hunters. The licensed hunter teaching a novice to hunt must be in a position to take any and all corrective action necessary to insure a safe hunt at all times. In order to do this they must be able to see and talk to the novice hunter. The use of any aid to vision (like binoculars) or hearing (like a radio) is prohibited. The number of persons accompanied at any one time is limited to two either under age 12 and/or using an exemption certificate.

What is the independent study option?
This is designed so that students can complete the knowledge part of the course on their own schedule. It is available on an extremely limited basis for both firearm and bow hunter students. Learn more about independent study option.

What is a field day?
This is offered by certified field day volunteer instructors at their convenience to complete the process of graduation of the independent study students. As a part of this process, you will be required to complete a test with a minimum of 85 percent given at the start of the field day to prove you have the required knowledge.

What is a traditional class?
This is the best and most recommended method. It is offered the most frequently statewide and year round. It is provided by volunteer instructors at their convenience and generally is held over three or more sessions. What is an archery hunter?
A hunter using a bow and arrow. In Nebraska long bows, recurve bows and compound bows are all considered a bow. There are restrictions on the use of bows and arrow for hunting and on draw weight that must be met for certain types of hunting.

What is considered a firearm?
A firearm is any "weapon" which is designed to expel any projectile by the action of an explosive. There are restrictions the use of firearms for hunting and on caliber, gauge and projectile energy that must be met for certain types of hunting.

What is an air rifle or pistol?
Air rifles and pistols are not considered firearms because they use only compressed air or gas to expel the projectile. If you hunt with an air rifle or pistol you must meet any and all license requirements and minimum requirements for caliber, gauge or projectile energy. If a season is listed as a firearm season you can not use an air rifle or pistol. Generally hunting is limited to rabbits, squirrels and non-game animals. There are no Hunter Education requirements for air rifle or pistol hunters.

What is proof of completion?
Proof of completion is required and must be carried on your person while hunting anything with a firearm or crossbow. It can be a certificate issued in your name that identifies you individually and states you have completed a Hunter Education course, or a valid unique number (issued to you individually on an official document) that is entered into our permit system and electronically printed on your permit. In Nebraska a separate bow hunter education certification is required for deer, antelope, elk and mountain sheep hunting with bow and arrow. It can be a certificate issued in your name that identifies you individually and states you have completed a Bow Hunter Education course, or a valid unique number (issued to you individually on an official document) that is entered into our permit system and electronically printed on your permit.

Any device that uses a bow held in a stock that fires a arrow or bolt. For all practical purposes a crossbow is considered the same as a firearm in Nebraska.
