Fish Identification Guide

Introduction

No more guessing what the unknown fish was you had an encounter with. The following identification key can be used to identify most of the 100-plus fish species you could encounter in the various waters of the state. Besides providing a colored ID key, information is also given on each particular fish species that may include where it can be commonly found, general habits, habitat preference, whether it is native or "introduced", what it eats, and the likelihood of capturing it. The key will eventually be expanded to include more information about the numerous "small" minnow species.

Before using the key, please familiarize yourself with the following terminologies and corresponding body parts. The actual key uses that information and other described body characteristics to help identify various fish found in Nebraska.

Note for Netscape Users: The identification guide opens in a new, full-screen window. If the window does not open properly, press the F11 key for fullscreen mode.
